Known for envisioning artistic and visually arousing spaces, Kristen Peña Interiors has made a significant mark on the Bay Area design community. When hired to decorate this 2,200-square-foot San Francisco condo, her team was ready to showcase their love for local makers and more. “The overall goal was sophisticated and sexy while comfort and areas to perch and take in the views were of major importance,” says Peña. “We were tasked with making small modifications to the home and decorating it.”

The apartment is a second home for the clients who wanted to carve out ample space for hosting parties with local friends. “The homeowners’ goals were to maximize the number of people they could comfortably have in the space while having many different areas to take in the view as they wanted the home to be comfortable for visiting out-of-town guests, as well as a personal escape high above the city,” she recalls. “Overall, this was a furnishings and decoration project—what this home needed was soul and personality.  We painted, wallpapered and added lighting and wall treatments as well.”

Being the team were not apart of the initial architectural planning, they had to customize pieces around some of the challenging elements. “We had to be very thoughtful with the shape and sizing of the furniture.  In fact, a custom sofa was constructed around a column in the main living area,” she says. “There are multiple different views offered so we had to be strategic that we each of the architectural nooks were properly allocated for function from dining to relaxing to entertaining.”

The final result is a contemporary masterpiece, full of California-based makers, luxurious textiles and mid-century references that allow the views to take center stage. “The interiors also offer a visual showcase of art, furnishings and decorative objects that all have a story to tell,” Peña proclaims.
